What is this a sign of? What should the oil pressure be at? Reason I'm writing is this. Either I didn't notice it since I bought the truck that it did it, or it just started happening, but now the oil pressure gauge fluctuates a lot from idle to driving. At startup and idle, it sits just above the 20 mark, at 65 MPH it sits right around 40,

Gauge Problem vs Oil Pressure Problem. Dashboard gauges do occasionally go bad, but it is very rare. Repairing a dashboard or gauge is usually is beyond the scope of DIY car maintenance. The gauge does receive its data from a simple sending unit on the engine, and those sending units do go bad quite frequently. So how do you determine which one is at fault, the gauge or its sender? You can buy an inexpensive universal oil pressure gauge from an auto parts store. In most cases, the gauge will fluctuate to indicate low oil pressure. When the gauge fluctuates to indicate high oil pressure, it is often indicative of a pressure relief valve problem. Factors that can cause oil pressure to fluctuate lower include high or low oil temperatures, diluted or worn oil, worn engine bearings or a worn oil pump, a damaged oil pan or dropped crankshaft plugs. Unlike many of the gauges on a car which are understandable with common sense and simple logic, the oil pressure gauge sometimes seems to be erratic. Most of the time, there's little to be worried about since breakdowns caused by loss of oil pressure is very low on the list of things likely to go wrong with your The car has an oil pressure indicator but its only function is to operate like an idiot light. When the oil pressure rises to about 10 psi the gauge needle moves to the NORMAL position and remains there unless the gauge fails or oil pressure drops.
